GPA and How to Calculate It
GPA (Grade Point Average) is used to express a student鈥檚 academic strength in a single numerical value. There are different types of GPA: cumulative, semester, major, etc.
Your semester GPA is an average of the grades you received in a given semester. Your cumulative GPA is an average of all the grades you鈥檝e received in all of your courses at 顶级国产视频*. Major GPA is an average of the grades you received in all of the courses required in the major.
Each course is assigned a certain number of semester hours; those with a higher number of semester hours carry more value than those with a lower number of semester hours. In addition, each grade is assigned a certain number of points, with higher grades carrying more value than lower grades. Therefore, GPA is the calculated average of the corresponding numerical value of your grades.
*Note: Grades earned at institutions other than 顶级国产视频, Grades of Pass or No Pass, remedial/developmental course grades, and grades replaced by repeated course policies are not calculated into the cumulative grade point average.
The basic formula for calculating GPA is:
GPA = Total Grade Points divided by Total Semester Hours
Multiply the credits for each course by the corresponding numerical grade point of the grade earned for each course. See the chart below for grades and their numerical values.
Grade to Points Conversion Grade Points Per Semester Hour A+ 4.00 A 4.00 A- 3.67 B+ 3.33 B 3.00 B- 2.67 C+ 2.33 C 2.00 D 1.00 F 0.00 - Add the total grade points together.
- Add together the number of semester hours you earned.
- Divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours, rounding to the nearest hundredth.
Imagine that you took four classes, each one counting for three semester hours, and received two A鈥檚 and two B鈥檚.
To calculate your GPA, multiply the grade points by the semester hours:
4 grade points X 3 semester hours = 12
4 grade points X 3 semester hours = 12
3 grade points X 3 semester hours = 9
3 grade points X 3 semester hours = 9
Add up your total grade points. In this case, it would be 42.
Then divide 42 (total grade points) by the total number of semester hours, in this case, 12.
42/12 = 3.5
Therefore, 3.5 would be your GPA.
You can find your GPA on your unofficial transcripts. Go to and click Self-Service Banner. Click on Student, then Student Records and, finally, Academic Transcript. Choose your transcript level (Undergraduate, Graduate or All) and click Submit to load desired transcript. Scroll to the end of the transcript to view Overall (Cumulative) GPA.
You can also find your GPA on your Degree Works audit. Go to and click Degree Works. Scroll to the Degree Requirements section of the audit and view Overall (Cumulative) GPA. Major and minor GPA can be located in the heading of each requirement block as well.

CIP Code Information
The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) provides a taxonomic scheme that supports the accurate tracking and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity. CIP was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 1980, with revisions occurring in 1985, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. Information on the 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2010 CIP can be accessed on the page under the section heading Archive and Historical. On the 2020 CIP Website, you can view both the 2020 CIP and the 2010 CIP.
